Donald Murphy

I graduated from Yale and married Linda in 1963. Kristina and Kathleen were born in 1964 and 1967 respectively. After a six month army stint, I worked at Bankers Trust for two years, and then got an MBA from Columbia. We moved to Short Hills, New Jersey where our daughters were raised. I joined Brown Brothers Harriman and Co. in 1966 and became a partner in the Wall Street firm at the end of 1982.  At the 1982 reunion, I re-met Susan Johnson Caulfield, who was living in Milwaukee with her two daughters and going through a divorce. The stars being aligned, we reconnected, and after a very painful disruption of my family, Susan and I were married in December of 1984. We lived in Bronxville and NYC . In 1987, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, to which she succumbed in October of 1989.

After several years of bachelorhood, I met Cynthia Oldenburg in September of 1997. She was on a business trip from Boston, and we met innocently, believe me it was, in the bar of the Plaza Hotel in New York. Our meeting was a week before the fortieth reunion of HGHS. I attended the first night of that reunion, and then excused myself to go to Boston .....'on a family matter'. We were married in November of 1998. We live in NYC , and I have been with Brown Brothers ever since 1966. In 2000, we added a residence in Dorset , Vermont. That has become our refuge, and we have been able to see several 1957 classmates there.

I am still 'working' at Brown Brothers, although not really. Retirement for partners is a gradual removal of oxygen [and compensation]. Sort of like a training program at the back end of a career. My daughters now each have their own families. Kristina has three sons and lives with her husband Reid Leslie in Pasadena, California where she has a career as CFO of a public company. Her younger sister Kathleen lives in Madison , New Jersey with her husband John Nittolo and their two daughters and son. Kathleen is active both in her community, and as a real estate broker.

We are able to remain close to Susan's daughters. Nancy Caulfield Bottino and her husband Paul live in the Boston suburbs with their two daughters. Jennifer Caulfield and her partner Dr. Stephanie Scott live in San Francisco with their daughter.

In the half century since we graduated, I have felt l incredibly fortunate in terms of my family , friends, and business career. There has been some stress, some sadness, and some disappointments, but so much happiness and love from family and friends that I never expected.
